419 Fraud: A Crime without Borders in a Postmodern World
Due to technological advances, consumer fraud is becoming a borderless crime. This paper examines Nigerian 419 or advanced fee fraud, where criminals on the margins of the global economy are targeting the citizenry of more prosperous nations. The costs and consequences of this phenomenon, as well as various social control efforts are considered. Possible theoretical explanations for 419 fraud are suggested. This phenomenon is explored in the context of postmodern society, and possible directions for future research presented.
