New Guide to “Creative Colleges” Features Ohio Northern University’s Department of Art & Design

Ohio Northern University’s Department of Art & Design received its second national recognition by Creative Colleges: A Guide for Student Actors, Artists, Dancers and Musicians, a publication that selects the top 200 schools in the nation for its creative programs for students.

The visual arts discipline at Ohio Northern, along with a listing of general facts about ONU, is included in the chapter on “Colleges for Artists–Midwest.” The chapter notes Marilyn Lysohir ’72 among prominent alumni. Lysohir has been a ceramic/sculpture artist for many years and has been internationally recognized for her work in numerous publications and exhibits.

“This is a great honor for Ohio Northern and the department, since the Midwest is home to so many fine academic art and design programs,” said Brit Rowe, chair and associate professor in art & design. “It is a testament to the high quality students and graduates of Ohio Northern and to the committed, talented faculty that we have in place.”

The department of A&D offers the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees with four major programs of study including advertising design, art education, graphic design and studio arts. ONU students can pursue many careers such as graphic design, corporate identity, advertising, wayfinding design, publication design, illustration, web design, exhibit design and curating, art therapy, art education and countless other fields.

The department is housed in the Wilson Art Center, a state-of-the art facility with up-to-date studios, classrooms, and computer lab. The Elzay Gallery of Art and the Stambaugh Studio Theatre Gallery feature an ambitious exhibit season and visiting artist program. Each year students gain practical experiences through internships, exhibitions, student teaching, study abroad, workshops, conferences and practicums that provide hands-on learning.

The department also offers students engagement in a number of student organizations, including pre-professional groups, domestic study opportunities, a film series and summer European trips.

Students excel in the visual arts at Ohio Northern and travel internationally to pursue their passions. This past year, a number of graphic design students studied design and typography at the University of the Arts London while another group of studio arts and art education students studied visual arts at the Studio Arts Center International in Florence, Italy. A senior art education major was accepted to a Fulbright-Hays program called “South Africa: Perspectives on Democracy” to participate and study the educational system and democracy in Lephisi Village of South Africa. Other design students have earned competitive internship opportunities including one at Mullen Advertising, a top 25 advertising firm in the United States. Students in art & design also won awards for their work including the Excellence in Visual Arts Award from the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Ohio.
