University Singers Set Fall Tour

ONU’s University Singers have set their annual fall tour, visiting churches and high schools in Ohio and Illinois.

The first appearance will be 10:45 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 24, at Zion Lutheran Church in Lima, Ohio. The home concert will be 8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 31 in Presser Hall. 

The 2010 fall tour will include church and high school concerts in Bluffton, Lima and Ada, Ohio, and in Illinois. During the next spring break they will travel through Ohio, Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

The fall tour will feature Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” sung in Hebrew with organ, harp and percussion in addition to several a cappella selections and others with flute and harp.

Faculty accompanist is Mary Jane Eichelberger on both organ and piano. Guest artists will be Christine (Gould) Thomas, BA ’03, Cincinnati, Ohio, on harp,; A. Lewis Jones, a freshman percussionist from Lima, Ohio; and senior flautist Sarah Voll from Ada, Ohio. Assistant accompanists are Adam Fahncke, a senior music major from Wapakoneta, Ohio, and Tony Wan, a sophomore music major from Cincinnati, Ohio.  Associate conductor is Timothy Smith, a senior music education major from Westerville, Ohio, and Eric Smith, senior music performance major from Toledo, Ohio, is assistant conductor.

Selections to be performed include “Gloria Fanfare” by Ames, “There Will be Rest” by Warland, “I Carry Your Heart With Me” by Dickau,  “in paradisum” by Forrest, Rutter’s “Amazing Grace” and “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” and “Northern Lights” and “Spheres” by Gjeilo. The concert will end on spirituals  “Go Down Moses” by Hailstork and John the Revelator” by Ivory.  The Northernaires, ONU’s vocal jazz ensemble, will also perform at the high schools.

As a long-standing tradition, the final selection will be John Ness Beck’s “Benediction” which features the seniors of the choir. The 48-voice select choir is under the direction of Dennis L. Kratzer, director of choral activities and professor of music.
