ONU to honor outstanding business alumnus

ImageOhio Northern University’s James F. Dicke College of Business Administration will present John J. Bishop with an Outstanding Service Award on Saturday, Oct. 9.
The award, given annually at Homecoming, honors individuals who have provided sustained and outstanding service to and whose contributions have positively impacted the College of Business Administration and Ohio Northern. This is the third year that Distinguished Alumni Awards have been presented by the college.
“John Bishop represents the very essence of a worthy recipient of the Outstanding Service Award because of his extensive and significant service to both the college as an advisory board member and ONU as a trustee,” said Dr. James W. Fenton Jr., dean of the College of Business Administration. “This recognition of Mr. Bishop is most appropriate and deserved. We are very fortunate and thankful to have such a man engaged with ONU to the degree that he is.”
Bishop currently serves as chairman, president and CEO of each of the 10 member companies that make up The Motorists Insurance Group. Since graduation from Northern, he has remained active in the ONU community by serving as vice chairman of the Board of Trustees and on the College of Business Administration Advisory Board. A native of Lima, Ohio, and graduate of Lima Central Catholic High School, Bishop was a 2010 inductee in the Lima Central Catholic Hall of Fame for professional achievement.
After joining Motorists in 1972, Bishop has held numerous field, office management and executive positions. He has been recognized by the Professional Insurance Agents of Ohio with a Presidential Citation and as the “Industry Person of the Year.” He also has received the National Service Award from National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC).
Bishop is an active member of a number of insurance organizations. He is a board member of the NAMIC, a past chairman of the NAMIC PAC, and a trustee and secretary for the Ohio Insurance Institute (OII). In addition, Bishop is a past president of both the Association of Ohio Life Insurance Companies (OALIC) and the Ohio Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (OAMIC).
