John Carroll tops Mount Union 5-3 in opener of 2010 OAC Softball Tournament

ADA -- John Carroll got a 3-run home run from Samantha Thompson and a 2-run home run from Michelle Murphy to knock off Mount Union 5-3 in the first game of the 2010 Ohio Athletic Conference Softball Tournament Friday morning at the ONU Softball Field.

The third-seeded Blue Streaks improve to 24-15, while the second-seeded Purple Raiders fall to 25-14.

JCU advances in the winner's bracket and will face the winner of the Ohio Northern/Muskingum contest in the semifinals at 3 pm Friday.

MTU moves to the loser's bracket and will face the loser of the Ohio Northern/Muskingum contest at 5 pm Friday.

Thompson's 3-run home run in the top of the first game the Blue Streaks a quick 3-0 lead and Murphy's dinger in the fourth made it 5-0 JCU.

MUC answered with a solo home run by Meghan Simon to lead off the bottom of the fourth to make it a 5-1 contest.

Jill Rader drilled a 2-run home run to center field with one out in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Purple Raiders within 5-3.

Brittany Danilov (14-9) threw 6.1 innings and picked up the win and Thompson got the final two outs to register her first save of the season.
