In this paper the authors used qualitative methodology to report on binge drinking among college students on a university campus. The results obtained through observations and interviews show that students enter into an “apprenticeship of drinking” as freshman and continue to drink as the result of perceived social expectations of college life. Students on average reported binge drinking twice per week, most often in social situations. Nearly all the students interviewed acknowledged that they would no longer binge drink after graduation.
