Idea Pitch Competition Winners Named

Jen Tabar, a junior biology major form Hinckley, Ohio, took the $250 top prize at Ohio Northern University’s James F. Dicke College of Business Administration entrepreneurial idea pitch competition on Feb. 3.

Renee LeGendre, a junior communication arts major from Toledo, Ohio, received the second prize award of $150. In the end, more than $1,000 in cash prizes were awarded to ONU students as well as a four $2,000 renewable scholarships for incoming freshmen. All prizes were made possible through the generosity of the Kern Family Foundation.

The high school seniors who received scholarships are Megan Bookser from Oakland Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Pa.; Nichole May from Van Buren High School in Van Buren, Ohio; Samantha Schulte from St. Joseph Academy in Cleveland, Ohio; and Nathan Zelmer from Newark High School in Newark, Ohio.

The idea pitch competitions require applicants to prepare two-minute presentations and answer questions from judges about their ideas. Ideas fall into one of the following categories: improvement of society anywhere in the world, improvement of human health care for any group on the planet, use of technology to improve our lives, and creation of new businesses and jobs.

These competitions aim to encourage creativity, innovation and the entrepreneurial mindset in our next generation of business and civic leaders while challenging the best young minds from across the Midwest to create and share ideas for improving our world.
