Students to Help with Tax Preparation
Elderly and low-income tax payers in Allen and Hardin counties can receive free income tax assistance from Ohio Northern University law and accounting students through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).
The VITA Program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income (generally, $49,000 and below) individuals across the country who cannot prepare tax returns on their own. As part of this program, ONU students have received training to help prepare basic tax returns and identify special credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly.
ONU students will offer free electronic filing (e-filing) services at several area locations during tax season. The sites are open from Feb. 10 until April 15 (excluding the week of Feb. 28-March 8). The following locations will be open at the designated times and staffed with IRS-certified volunteers:
ACCENT (Allen County Center for Employment and Training): 1501 S. Dixie Highway, Lima, Ohio. Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to noon. By appointment only. Call 419-999-0360 to schedule an appointment.
ReStore: 210 N. Main St., Lima, Ohio. Thursdays from 2:30 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. No prescheduled appointments; walk-ins only.
