Mock Trial Team Ranked Fifth at Scarlet and Gray Invitational
In October 2009, the Ohio Northern University Mock Trial team returned from the fifth annual Scarlet and Gray Invitational, hosted by The Ohio State University Mock Trial Club, with some hardware. Team 448, representing ONU, captured fifth place out of the 24 teams that were entered in the tournament. The team finished the event with a record of five wins, two losses and one tie.
Students on this year’s team 448 are Alexandra Habbouche, a junior political science major from Oregon, Ohio; Dan Jones, a senior political science major from Ashland, Ohio; Robert Kidd, an international business and economics major from North Ridgeville, Ohio; Laura Peet, a senior political science major from Ithaca, Mich.; Lara Wood, a senior international studies major from Clyde, Ohio; Steve Keslar, a senior journalism major from New Kensington, Pa.; and Matt Wiseman, a senior history major from Findlay, Ohio.
“The experience will serve them well, as I have seen improvement with each new trial,” said Nicole Winget, ONU mock trial coach. “I am convinced that they will do very well in future tournaments.”
Jones earned a perfect score of 20 and received the outstanding attorney award for the prosecution. On the weekend, Habbouche earned an outstanding witness award for the defense.
“I am very proud of our accomplishment at the competition, in light of the quality of the teams we competed against,” said JoAnn Scott, mock trial coach. “I believe that ONU students can compete against the very best.”
Jones said, “We really worked hard as a team, and all of the awards we received were a tribute to the hard work we’ve put in.”
