Responding to the Haitian Earthquake

Haiti flagMembers of the ONU family have been quick to respond to the devastation of the recent earthquake in Haiti through a number of charitable organizations. The University is encouraging students, faculty and staff to offer support through organizations already engaged in work on the island nation.

For example, a number of University family members have been sponsoring Haitian children for years through Compassion International and World Vision. A current student has an aunt and uncle who run an orphanage in Haiti, HIS Home for Children, and are currently trying to secure humanitarian evacuation for their charges.

These are just a few of the organizations already supported by ONU family members. ONU family members are asked to post information below about their participation in relief efforts.

Participants are asked to post a link to the organization they are supporting and how they are acquainted with it. This will give others an opportunity to help through established charities.

Just wanted to share a few

Submitted by Jay Mager (not verified) on Thu, 01/21/2010 - 12:50pm.
Just wanted to share a few of my emails from my step sister, who has worked in Haiti for 3 years as a photographer for the UN and has returned/is currently in Haiti with the UN. Please keep her as well as the other care givers in your thoughts. Peace. Mon, January 18, 2010 1:53:38 AM Subject: I'm fine! It's a total hell hole here and might as well be at war in terms of sleeping arrangements, no where to even pitch a tent! Sleeping on the floor of my office, just finished working and heading into bed now. I'm fine though, just hot, mosquitos everywhere, lots of dirt and dust and people who are miserable. My un colleagues are NOT ok, I repeat they should all be evacuated and new staff flown in. They are traumatized. They pulled two guys out of the UN today, one of them while the SG was here so shot that. So exhausted I will sleep fine on a floor, have my mat and sleeping bag. Nighty night and will give you much more of an update tomorrow. LOVE YOU ALL! Sent: Wed, January 20, 2010 7:51:38 AM Subject: Earthquake Hi All I'm fine. We had a 6.1 earthquake this am but I am fine. I was sleeping in my tent with a colleague and she and I panicked fumbling with the zipper on the door but by the time we got out of the tent it was over. Pretty disturbing way to wake up! This is exactly why we are all sleeping outside. Not sure what's going on outside of Logbase right now but about to head out. The epicenter was in Petit Goave which is south of PAP so hopefully damage is minimal both here and there but somehow doubt that. Anyway just wanted to let you all know that I'm fine.

HIS Home for Children

Submitted by Mindy Nungester (not verified) on Wed, 01/20/2010 - 10:47am.
As many of you know, my husband's brother & sister-in-law have an orphanage in Port-au-Prince. We received word this morning that the U.S. Embassy will probably begin releasing approximately 100 of their children to come to the states beginning today. We need coats & blankets to get these children from the airport to Union Chapel where their families will pick them up. Used items can really be a blessing!!! We just ask that they be clean. We need coats for infants through small adults. Items can be dropped off in the Office of Career Services or call 2760 to arrange for pick-up. Thank you!
