Dicke/McCulloch4th District's Civil Rights Champion and ONU Honoree up for Statuary Honor

In the heat of the civil rights battle in 1964 our Congressman, William MCulloch, appeared at ONU for a Law Day speech discussing the then pending historic Civil Rights Act.  Mr. McCulloch, as ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, was the pivotal figure in the passage of this legislation and other important civil rights laws of the 1960's.

Two years later, Jim Dicke II worked as an assistant to Congressman McCulloch during the continued efforts to enact open housing legislation.  When the Ohio legislature's National Statuary Selection Committee began the search for nominees from which the selection would be made to replace Ohio Governor William Allen in the National Statuary Hall in the Capitol in Washington, D.C., Jim and others, who never forgot the legacy of McCulloch's public service, launched an effort in support of his selection.  As the 4th congressional district's representative for 25 years, Congressman McCulloch chose the Pettit College of Law, which conferred an honorary degree upon him in 1965, as the repository for his office papers upon his retirement.  More information about the presentation before the Ohio legislature's selection committee may be found at  Voting among Ohio residents for the Statuary Hall selection process ends June 12.  There will also be a table in the McIntosh Center during the upcoming Alumni Weekend  where information about Mr. McCulloch will be available.

The Alumni College seminar will be a discussion held by, Dr. Robert Alexander, BA ’94, associate professor of political science. Dr. Alexander will provide a lively and energetic assessment of President Barrack Obama’s first year and half in office.
