Faculty, Student, Alumni Publish Paper

Jeffrey A. Gray, professor of chemistry and chair of the department of chemistry and biochemistry, along with Nicholas J. Dunn, a senior in chemistry from Harrod, Ohio, and recent graduates, William H. Humphries IV, BS ’06, Adam R. Offenbacher, BS ’05, and Travis L. King, BS ’03, are authors of an article published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry, a publication of the American Chemical Society.

Published in the Nov. 26, 2009 issue, the article is one of a number in the Robert W. Field Festschrift special issue. Gray was invited to contribute the article for this special issue because Professor Field was his Ph.D. advisor.

Titled “pH-dependent cis →trans Isomerization Rates of Azobenzene Dyes in Aqueous Solution,” the article reports on research reports on research using lasers to measure novel kinetic properties and demonstrates for the first time that isomerization of these dyes may be acid catalyzed. The work was funded by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement (RCSA) and the National Science Foundaton (NSF).

The article is available online at http://pubs.acs.org/toc/jpcafh/113/47

The ONU graduates are doing graduate work in chemistry. King recently completed his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois while Offenbacher and Humphries are nearing completion of their Ph.D. work at Georgia Tech.
