Public Invited to View Geminid Meteor Shower

Nov 30, 2009
Ohio Northern University's Astronomy Club will host a public viewing of the Geminid meteor shower in celebration of the International Year of Astronomy (IYA). The viewing will take place in the parking lot of Wander Field Sunday, Dec. 13, at 8 p.m.

This event is free and open to the public.

Student assistants will be on site and adorned with red and green glow sticks. Several telescopes also will be set up to view Jupiter and deep space objects such as the Andromeda Galaxy.

The IYA is a worldwide celebration and remembrance of the 400th anniversary of the year that Galileo used a telescope to revolutionize the way in which humanity perceives the universe.

The peak of the Geminid meteor shower is expected on Dec. 13. However, should visibility be limited due to cloud cover, the event will be postponed until Dec. 14. To check for cancellations, visit www2.onu.edu/~j-pinkney/astro
