Prestigious scholarships, fellowships, and similar awards are available to superior students of all years and interests, as well as recent graduates. When applying for these prestigious awards, students and recent graduates compete with candidates from across the country and, in some cases, around the globe. Some awards require university nomination or endorsement, while others permit students to apply on their own. A few examples are listed below to show the breadth of opportunities available; many other prestigious scholarships exist.
- Goldwater Scholarships: awarded to sophomores and juniors with significant STEM* research
- Gilman Scholarships: supporting underrepresented students studying abroad in non-traditional locations
- Truman Scholarships: funding graduate school for college juniors with exceptional leadership potential and a commitment to a career in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in public service
- Fulbright Grants: financing post-baccalaureate study, research, or teaching in more than 155 countries worldwide
*STEM is an acronym for the fields of science science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Why should I apply?
Winning a major award is a great honor that can pave the way for future opportunities, as well as provide valuable funding, but applying is worthwhile in and of itself. Whether or not you receive a prestigious scholarship, you will emerge from the application process with a stronger sense of self and a clearer vision of who you might become.
These major awards are neither funded nor administered by Ohio Northern University; prospective and current students seeking state, local, and ONU scholarships should contact the ONU Financial Aid office.
