Teaching English in Afghanistan

Feb 12, 2009

Colonel John J. Smith, West Point professor of English, will discuss "Teaching English at the Military Academy of Afghanistan and the Situation There" in the Ohio Northern University Dicke Forum on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m.

Presented by the ONU Phi Beta International Forum, the event is free and open to the public.

A 1981 graduate of ONU, Smith will speak on his experience teaching English in Afghanistan and the situation in this war-torn country. Smith originally believed he was going to Afghanistan to help set up a college-level English program at their new military academy; upon arrival he discovered that the school's English professors did not speak English.

After graduating from ONU with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature, Smith earned his master's from Texas A&M and his doctorate from the University of Florida. Smith has taught at the National War College in Washington, D.C., and is the editor of "Military Review." He recently returned from Baghdad and is a veteran of the first Gulf War.
