Professors to Present Supreme Court Decisions at ONU

Oct 13, 2008
Two Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law professors will present updates on U.S. Supreme court cases on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 11:30 a.m. in the Moot Court Room.

Professor Joanne Brant will discuss the Supreme Court decision in District of Columbia v. Heller. The court struck down the District of Columbia's prohibition of handguns and found that the Second Amendment right to "keep and bear arms" includes a personal right to handgun ownership for home defense.

Professor Michael Lewis will discuss the Supreme Court decision in Boumediene v. Bush. The court found that provisions in the Military Commissions Act, which sought to deny habeas corpus rights to detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, were unconstitutional. The court decided that habeas corpus rights extend to non-U.S. citizens being held at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, although it left open the question of whether the extraterritorial scope of those rights extend beyond that one facility.

This event is free and open to the public.
