Dr. David F. Kisor, professor of pharmacokinetics at Ohio Northern University's Raabe College of Pharmacy, has been invited to speak at the Ehrlich II Conference in Nuremburg, Germany, Oct. 3-5, 2008.
Kisor will present "Organ Independent Drug Elimination," discussing how certain drugs are "eliminated" from the body by mechanisms other than kidney elimination or liver metabolism.
The presentation is based on two drugs that Kisor helped bring to the market. Cisatracurium (Nimbex®) is a neuromuscular-blocking drug most commonly used to relax the trachea, allowing a tube to be placed for mechanical breathing during surgery. Nelarabine (Arranon®) is used primarily to treat certain forms of leukemia.
The Ehrlich II Conference is dedicated to Paul Ehrlich and is held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his Nobel Prize award. In his Nobel lecture on Dec. 11, 1908, Ehrlich laid out the foundation of chemotherapy and the use of drugs to cure patients. He coined the term "Magic Bullets," and this term is still used in science, as well as in the lay world, for particularly important and clinically useful drugs.
The conference focuses on the discovery, development and successful use of "Magic Bullet" drugs in clinical. Particular reference is given to what the body does to the drug (pharmacokinetics), what the drug does to the body (pharmacodynamics) and the more rational use of "Magic Bullets" by individualization of therapy.
