Ohio Northern Chapter of the National Broadcasting Society Receives Awards

The Ohio Northern University chapter of the National Broadcasting Society attended the 44th annual National Broadcasting Society convention in Chicago and walked away with multiple awards.

The WONB broadcast team of senior Matt Schimmoeller, of Van Buren, Ohio, and junior Seth Castle, of Washington Court House, Ohio, won first place in the audio sports play-by-play category for their radio segment “The Voice of Polar Bear Football.” Senior broadcasting and electronic media major Emmy Llewellyn, of Gales Ferry, Conn., won first place in the audio public affairs/interview program category for her weekly show on WONB-FM, “Community Clips.”

Ohio Northern University had student finalists in three other categories of the nationwide media competition including ONU senior Evan Sterling, of Sharon, Pa., for his piece “Farewell Father Dan” in the open video category. Matt Schimmoeller was a finalist in the audio sports segment for his piece “Polar Bear Football-Opener 2006.” Schimmoeller and sophomore Lia Hileman, of North Olmstead, Ohio, were finalists in the audio magazine program category for their WONB-FM production “The Big Nine at Nine.”

Additionally, the ONU chapter of NBS was recognized as a model chapter for 2006, one of eight in the nation, and earned honorable mention for community service for their first annual “Dunk a DJ” event, which benefited Cancer Patient Services of Findlay, Ohio.

The National Broadcasting Society is a professional organization composed of students and professionals who have an interest in electronic media. Its purpose is to connect students with industry professionals to provide a link to the "real world" of electronic media. Alpha Epsilon Rho (AERho) is the honor society within NBS.
