Ohio Northern's Concrete Canoe Advances to Nationals
The Ohio Northern University Concrete Canoe Team has qualified for the national competition for the second year in a row.
The team took second place in design paper, second place in final product, and second place overall at the regional competition at Michigan Tech on April 3, to qualify for the national competition in Seattle, June 14-16, 2007.
ONU finished behind Michigan Tech. Other schools in the competition included Lawrence Tech, Akron, Michigan State, University of Michigan, and Western Michigan. Last year marked the first time that ONU made it to the nationals.
This year's canoe "Northern Edge" has a length of 19 ft. 7 in., weighs 170 lbs. and is black in color.
The co-captains of this year's team were senior civil engineering major Michael Brown from Ada, Ohio, and freshman civil engineering major Brad Barber from Bowling Green, Ohio. Other team members are Audrey Seals, a senior from Junction City, Ohio; Ruth Bickel, a senior from Alger, Ohio; Brandon Strohl, a senior from New Lexington, Ohio; Melinda Moser, a sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio; Anna Santino, a sophomore from Gahanna, Ohio; Sara McDonald, a sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio; Ryan Mahle, a junior from Kettering, Ohio; Erik Lange, a senior from Chagrin Falls, Ohio; Christopher Shearer, a senior from Strongsville, Ohio; and Luisa Chinchilla, a freshman from North Olmsted, Ohio. All are civil engineering majors.
Advisor for the team is Dr. Farhad Reza, associate professor of civil engineering.
