ONU SIFE Team named USA Regional Champion

The Ohio Northern University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team was named a SIFE USA Regional Champion, at the SIFE USA regional competition on March 28. The event is one of 17 SIFE USA regional competitions held across the United States in March and April. SIFE is an international non-profit organization active on more than 1,400 university campuses in 48 countries. SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that focuses on: market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills, and business ethics. After presenting a report of their yearlong community outreach projects to a panel of business leaders, the ONU SIFE team was named regional champions. The ONU team will advance to the national level of SIFE competition at the SIFE USA National Exposition May 6-8 in Dallas.

A sample of the ONU SIFE team projects this year include:

  • Global Holidays -- An all day event involving children ages 3 to 12 who learned about how global markets work, the concept of foreign currency exchange and the importance of foreign customs when interacting with individuals from around the world.
  • MI Ready Entrepreneurship Challenge -- This event pitted four teams of ninth graders against each other in a mock effort to redesign the Vince Lombardi NFL Super Bowl Trophy. Team decisions involved aesthetics, costs, quality, out-sourcing, entrepreneurship, pricing and business ethics.
  • For Debt or For Worse -- This financial literacy campaign focused on the skills necessary to build the financial independence of members of the campus of ONU. Five seminars were held focusing on such topics as credit, reconciling college loans, employee benefits, investing and preparing tax returns.
  • Say Security - The consulting project helped a local business that sells premiere digital technology better control costs by improving their inventory handling and shrinkage.

Members of the ONU SIFE team are: Michael Smith, senior finance major from Antwerp, Ohio; Aaron Hall, senior accounting major from Piqua, Ohio; Arielle Hord, sophomore marketing major from Willard, Ohio; Alicia Ochei, freshman accounting major from Houston, Texas; Chris Corrado, freshman marketing major from Cincinnati, Ohio; Tim White, sophomore business administration major from Lima, Ohio; Lesley Parker, senior international business and economics major from Franklin, Tennessee; John Pfeffenberger, senior accounting major from St. Marys, Ohio; Mark Suchan, senior management major from Independence, Ohio; Jake Bennett, junior accounting major from Prospect, Ohio; Sarah Langa, senior accounting major from Broadview Heights, Ohio Jessee Meek, senior biology major from Bellefontaine, Ohio; Katie Rumbaugh, junior business administration major from Wooster, Ohio; Kim Heckbert, senior international business and economics major from Steamboat Springs, Colorado; Julia Post, junior international business and economics major from St. Henry, Ohio Matt Rauch, senior international business and economics major from Fremont, Ohio; Elizabeth Zwayer, sophomore accounting major from Amanda, Ohio.

Dr. Kay Zekany, associate professor of accounting, is the ONU SIFE Sam Walton Fellow and advisor. Members of the ONU SIFE advisory board are: Dr. Jill Christopher, ONU associate professor of accounting, Scott Wills, director of development for the College of Pharmacy, Beth Runser, CPA for Rea and Associates and Chad Hoffman, president of Richwood Bank.
