No. 21 Women’s Golf sits second after tough first round at the OAC Championships

HARROD - The No. 21-ranked Ohio Northern women's golf team carded a 362 and are in second place after the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships at the Colonial Golfers Club.

The sun was shining but a cool, stiff 25-mile an hour wind made the course play long and difficult.

Otterbein, the No. 8-ranked team in the country, leads the championship after a round of 352. ONU is second at 362 and Baldwin-Wallace is third at 400.

Senior Meagan Brennan, trying to defend her OAC Individual crown, led the Polar Bears with a round of 46-41-87. She will start the final round in a tie for third, four shots behind Otterbein's Natalie King and John Carroll's Amanda Shannon, who each carded rounds of 83.

Freshman Ashley Johnson posted one of only six rounds in the 80s, as she came home with a 45-43-88. She is currently in fifth place.

Sophomore Megan Russell had an up-and-down round of 46-47-93 and sits in a tie for ninth. Senior Amy Gillen is one-shot behind her teammate as she posted a round of 48-46-94 and will start tomorrow in a tie for 11th.

Persha Ford rounded out the Polar Bear five with a round of 49-46-95 and is in a tie for 13th.

"The wind certainly made things difficult but our girls know we left some shots out there today," said ONU head coach Stacey Hairston. "We're fortunate to be down just ten shots and if we play smarter golf tomorrow, we have a very good chance to close the gap."

The second and final round will begin Sunday morning at 9 am at the Colonial Golfers Club.
