Brand's season-high 25 leads ONU past Mt. Union 69-58
ALLIANCE - Ohio Northern senior center Erin Brand scored a season-high 25 points to lead Ohio Northern to a 69-58 Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball victory at Mount Union Saturday afternoon at the Timken Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears wrap up their regular season schedule with a 19-6 record and will be the No. 2-seed in next week's OAC Tournament with a 14-4 league record.
Mount Union falls to 9-16, 6-12 and will be the seventh seed.
The two teams will play again on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the OAC Tournament, as the Purple Raiders come to Ada to face ONU at 7:30 pm at the ONU Sports Center.
With a victory, ONU would host a semifinal game Thursday night at 7:30 pm.
The OAC Tournament finals are slated for Saturday at 3 pm at the highest remaining seed.
On Saturday, Brand was 10-of-17 from the field and 5-for-5 from the line top lead the Polar Bears.
Emily Culbertson was the only other ONU player to score in double figures with 11 points.
Tessa Pohovey and Alicia Williams led Mt. Union with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Northern took control from the onset, racing to a 20-9 lead with 6:04 gone in the contest.
The Purple raiders would pull within 25-20 at the 10:47 mark, but ONU would go on a 11-2 run to take a 38-24 lead with 3:36 left in the first half.
Two Culbertson free throws at the 4:16 mark of the game gave ONU its biggest lead at 65-49.
Northern made 25-of-47 field goal attempts for 53.2 percent and MUC made 20-of-53 of its field goals for 37.7 percent.
Mt. Union out-rebounded ONU 29-26.
Brand's 25 points moved her up to No. 4 on ONU's all-time career scoring list with 1,110 points.
