Polar Bears defeat Capital 53-41 on Senior Day

ADA - Ohio Northern women's basketball seniors Erin Brand, Tara Butler, Megan Cevasco, Jenny Markle, Mallory Rentz and Leah Zimmerman competed in their final regular season home game, as the Polar Bears defeated Capital 53-41 Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.

With the win, Northern improves to 17-6, 12-4 Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Crusaders are now 15-8, 9-7.

Ohio Northern played two completely different halves, scoring 19 points on 22.2 percent shooting in the first half and scoring 34 points on 46.2 percent shooting in the second half.

Although struggling offensively in the first half, Northern played well on defense, holding the Crusaders to only 22 points and only being down three at the break.

Zimmerman got ONU on the board at the 16:10 mark with a 3-pointer, but the Polar Bears did not score again until Brittany Bogart made two free throws with 8:55 left in the half.

Capital scored the first two points of the second half, but the Polar Bears proceeded to score six unanswered points, giving them a 25-24 lead.

The score was 28-28 with 16:02 remaining in the game before ONU went on an 8-0 run to give them a lead which they would never relinquish.

The Crusaders cut the lead to 42-35 with 7:24 left, but Emily Culbertson responded with a 3-pointer from the corner to push the lead back up to double digits.

Ohio Northern won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Capital 44-33 for the game.

Cevasco tied a career high, hauling in 10 rebounds, while Brand had a season-high 11 boards.

Brand also had a game-high 18 points to record her first double-double of the season and fifth of her career.

Markle added to her 3-point record, sinking 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and scoring 11 points in the game, while Alisha Rinehart dished out a career-high five assists.

"It is always nice for the seniors to be able to win on Senior Day," said head coach Michele Durand. "I felt our rebounding was a huge factor in today's game as well."

The Polar Bears will travel to Muskingum on Wednesday at 7:30 pm and Mount Union on Saturday at 3 pm to finish OAC regular season play.
