Brand scores 23, but Wilmington downs Ohio Northern 81-61

WILMINGTON - Erin Brand scored 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting, but Wilmington was too much for the Ohio Northern women's basketball team, as the Quakers defeated the Polar Bears 81-61 Wednesday evening at Fred Razik Arena.

ONU drops to 16-6 overall and 11-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while WC improves to 17-5, 11-4.

Alisha Rinehart added 19 points for the Polar Bears and Brittany Bogart recorded a team-leading seven rebounds in the loss.

Wilmington doubled Northern's rebound total 42-21 and shot a near-perfect 14-for-15 from the free-throw line.

The Quakers also shot 52.8 percent from the field, including a remarkable 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) from the 3-point line.

The Polar Bears shot just 39.7 from the field and connected on only l4-of-20 3-pointers.

Ohio Northern scored the first five points of the game on a jump shot from Leah Zimmerman followed by a 3-point bucket from Megan Cevasco.

Wilmington responded with a 9-2 run before Zimmerman hit a 3-pointer to give the Polar Bears their last lead of the game at 10-9 with 15:09 left in the first half.

WC's lead ballooned to 15 points at the 2:14 mark in the first half when Jackie Hauke nailed a 3-pointer, making the score 38-23.

After trading points, Rinehart connected on four free throws in the last 14 seconds of the half, cutting the halftime deficit to eight at 40-32.

Wilmington then went on a 15-6 run to begin the half and put the game out of reach.

The largest lead for the Quakers was 77-52 with 4:18 left in the game.

Gina Hyle led WC with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Hauke and Katie Streck tallied 16 points and 13 points, respectively.

Ohio Northern will return to action this Saturday to host Capital at 3 pm at the ONU Sports Center.
