Theatre Arts presents student-directed one-act plays

Apr 18, 2016

Ohio Northern University’s Department of Theatre Arts will present its final production of the year, three student-directed one-act plays, in the Mathile Lab Theatre on April 21-23 at 7:30 p.m., with matinee shows scheduled for April 23-24 at 2 p.m.

This finale of the theatrical season will allow student directors to offer two hours of entertainment that offers a medley of short plays packed with theatrical variety.

The performance will open with the comic monologue, “Mrs. Sorken” by Christopher Durang, directed by Elizabeth Roth, a senior international theatre production major. This is a welcoming speech to the audience by a rather batty spectator who explains in hilarious terms what she likes and dislikes about the theatre.

The first one-act play is “Chamber Music” by Arthur Kopit, directed by Jordan Loyd, a junior double major in theatre and music performance from Independence, Ky. Kopit’s absurdist comedy from the 1960s features a group of female patients in a mental institution, gathered for a community meeting, which goes zanily wrong, in part because of all the women’s alter egos.

The second one-act play entitled “Scenes from Metamorphosis” is a cutting from the longer play by Mary Zimmerman, directed by Jennifer Lynn Giangola, a senior international theatre production major from Ashtabula, Ohio. In this lyrical piece, an ensemble of actors imaginatively presents several myths from the Roman poet Ovid.

The final performance will be Kevin McFillen’s “Subtraction,” directed by senior international theatre production major, Roth. In this intriguing play about memory and loss, an elderly man feeding pigeons in a park encounters a woman from “the office of subtraction,” an office, we learn, whose task is to balance the universal equation.

Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors, $10 for ONU faculty and staff and $5 for students and children.
