ONU to host bone marrow drive

Ohio Northern University will host a bone marrow drive on the campus’s “Tundra,” just south of the English Chapel, on Friday, April 20, from 6-10 p.m.

The procedure is free and consists of a cheek swab and some paperwork to place participants on the national registry. Every registrant will be entered into a raffle for prizes donated by local businesses. The first 150 registrants also will receive a free T-shirt.

ONU to celebrate National Women’s Health Week

Ohio Northern University’s Kappa Epsilon (KE) will celebrate National Women’s Health Week by hosting women’s health events in the Ada, Kenton and Lima, Ohio, communities from April 17 to 27. This year’s theme is “It’s Your Time!”

KE will be at several local locations to distribute information about preventive screenings, increasing physical activity, nutrition, mental health and smoking cessation. In addition, they will offer blood pressure screenings and information on heart health.

Engineering students create robots to play in robotic football game at Notre Dame

Students from Ohio Northern University’s T.J. Smull College of Engineering have created a team of robotic football players to compete in the fourth annual University of Notre Dame robotic football competition on Friday, April 20, at 7 p.m. in Notre Dame’s Stepan Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Kappa Epsilon to sponsor women’s health education

In celebration of National Women’s Health Week, 2012, Kappa Epsilon, the women’s professional pharmacy sorority, will be offering health education and screening in six different locations during April. The events will include information on preventive screenings, increasing physical activity, nutrition, mental health and smoking cessation. Kappa Epsilon members will also offer blood pressure screening and information on heart health.

ONU's American Marketing Association places first in national competition

Ohio Northern University’s American Marketing Association (AMA) took top honors in a Strategic Allocation of Business Resources (SABRE) market simulation competition at the AMA International Collegiate Conference New Orleans on Thursday, March 22. ONU was one of 35 universities that participated in the eight-hour competition, including Ferris State University and Johns Hopkins University, which placed second and third, respectively.

Speaker set for April 17

Charles Fax, vice president for Israel Affairs for Jewish National Fund, will speak at 7 p.m., April 17, in the Dicke Forum, sponsored by Phi Beta Delta and ONU’s Department of History, Politics and Justice.

Fax will present "Positively Israel: How Israel Makes the World a Better Place,” a 25-minute presentation and video followed by questions and answers.

Poster presentaton selected as outstanding

Sara Ginty, a fourth-year pharmacy student and organizational communication minor from Olmsted Falls, Ohio, presented at the Central States Communication Association Undergraduate Conference, March 28-31, 2012, in Cleveland. This year’s conference was exceptionally competitive with a less than at 25 percent acceptance rate. Ginty’s work was selected as an outstanding poster presentation at the conference.

Steel Drum Band and Percussion Ensemble to perform in Nashville

Ohio Northern University’s Percussion Ensemble and Steel Drum Band will begin a tour to historic Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn., on March 30. The ONU band is under the direction of Dr. Sarah Waters, assistant professor of music, who will take her students to Elder and Seton High Schools in Cincinnati before heading to Nashville.

Pharmacy student awarded Student Leadership Award

Ohio Northern University student Calvin Ice, a fifth-year pharmacy major from Rawson, Ohio, has been chosen as a recipient of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Student Leadership Award. Ice is one of 12 students in the nation to be selected for the award.

Student awarded Goldwater Scholarship

Ohio Northern University student Zachary Dunn, a senior ACS chemistry and applied physics double major with an astronomy minor and an education concentration, has been selected as a Goldwater Scholar by the trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. This marks the eighth consecutive year that Ohio Northern students have received this honor, the premier undergraduate award of its type in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.
