ONU student receives Presser Scholar Award
Ohio Northern University student Mark W. Blowers, a junior music education major from Toledo, Ohio, was awarded the Presser Scholar Award at ONU Honors Day on May 7. The award includes a $4,800 grant.
The award is given to a student who shows excellence in academics and passion for music. In order to present the scholarship each year, the University must have at least 40 undergraduate music majors enrolled in the program. The recipient must have at least one-third of their credit hours in an area other than music.

Ohio Northern University student Brooke Hayden, a sophomore electrical engineering major from New Carlisle, Ohio, has received a scholarship through the Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program.

Emmy winner to conduct for Spring Band Festival
Ohio Northern University’s music department will host the 36th annual Spring Band Festival on Sunday, May 8, at 4 p.m. The event will feature Emmy-winning composer Julie Giroux, who will serve as the guest conductor for the ONU Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Ohio All-State Honors Band.

ONU to recognize student leaders at 13th annual President’s Leadership Dessert
Ohio Northern University will host the 13th annual President’s Leadership Dessert on Wednesday, May 11, at 7 p.m. in the King Horn Center’s field house. An evening of fellowship, dessert and awards, the President’s Leadership Dessert is designed by the University to thank and recognize students who have demonstrated leadership potential.

LeGendre receives PRSA award
Renee LeGendre, a senior communications major from Toledo, Ohio, has been recognized as the outstanding graduate from the Central Ohio Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).
The award recognizes one graduating student from the seven university and college public relations programs that the chapter supports.

ONU finishes first in OPA’s Innovative Pharmacy Business Plan Competition
Three student members of the Ohio Northern University National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) took first place in the Ohio Pharmacists Association’s Innovative Pharmacy Business Plan Competition (IPBPC).
The students, Lauren Anderson, a fourth-year pharmacy major from Monroe, Mich., Elizabeth Crandall, a fourth-year pharmacy major from Cattaraugus, N.Y., and Andrea Stan, a fifth-year pharmacy major from New Carlisle, Ohio, presented their plan, “The Farmacy,” during the 133rd Ohio Pharmacists Association Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio, held April 8-10, 2011.

Astronomy Club to host ‘Galaxies of Spring’
The Ohio Northern University Astronomy Club invites ONU students, faculty and staff as well as Ada and the surrounding communities to “The Galaxies of Spring,” an astronomy event in the ONU Observatory on Friday, May 6, from 9 to 11 p.m.
During the viewing, telescopes will first follow the crescent moon as it descends in the west and then Saturn as it rises in the east. After twilight, participants will hunt down some galaxies near the North Galactic Pole, which will be well placed near the meridian.

Ohio Northern to recognize academic achievement at Honors Day
Ohio Northern University celebrates its 39th annual Honors Day program on Saturday, May 7, from 8:15 a.m. until 5 p.m.
This year’s Honors Day continues the rich tradition of ONU’s colleges and departments recognizing students and faculty members for scholarly achievement and service to the University community. More than 40 undergraduate academic departments and honor societies will present awards and induct new members.

Mathematics and statistics faculty and students present papers at Youngstown State University
Senior mathematics majors, Molly Eickholt, Dublin, Ohio, and Kristin Elix, Englewood, Ohio, and junior statistics major, Dave Mangus, Canfield, Ohio, presented papers at the recent spring meeting of the Ohio Section of the Mathematics Association of America (MAA).
Those three presentations, capped off by a presentation by Kris Rosendale, visiting instructor in mathematics, made up an “All ONU” session Saturday morning at the event held at Youngstown State University.
