ONU Senior Engineers Exhibit Capstone Project at MoldMaking Expo

May 29, 2008
Three Ohio Northern University senior mechanical engineering majors showcased their senior capstone project at the 2008 MoldMaking Expo April 23-24 in Novi, Mich.

John Miller, from Lebanon, Ohio; Chris Ruthstrom, from New Albany, Ohio; and Dale Ferrell, from Belmont, Ohio, along with their advisor Dr. Michael Rider, professor of mechanical engineering, displayed their full-scale milling machine at the Expo.

The team received many positive comments from booth visitors, including remarks from executives of large machine tool builders Haas and Okuma. The MoldMaking Expo is a showplace for the latest in moldmaking product and process technology.

The team committed to using only American-made components for their project, a choice that won the support of a number of regional companies, including Minster Machine Company of Minster, Ohio.

A long-time ally of ONU engineering, Minister Machine and two of their subsidiaries, Midwest Industrial Casting and Midwest Machining & Fabrication, offered extensive manufacturing-related design guidance to the project team. These companies generously provided not only time and materials but also four custom castings weighing a combined 2,600 lbs. Boco Machine of Ada, Ohio, also donated 18 hours of machining to this capstone project.
