ONU Engineers Take Flight

Apr 28, 2008
A team of Ohio Northern University mechanical engineering seniors competed in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aero Design East competition April 18-20 in Marietta, Ga. The goal of this competition was to design, construct and fly a radio-controlled model aircraft that met specifications and could carry as much weight as possible.

The ONU team placed 15th overall among 39 teams in their class. They received a third-place award in the written report category. The team's airplane made successful flights while empty and then with six pounds of weight on board. With 13 pounds on board, the plane flew very well, but its landing gear failed on landing. Attempts to fix the landing gear and fly again resulted in another failed gear and, finally, a flight-ending crash.

The ONU team consisted of seniors Kevin Burns of Hamburg, N.Y.; Charles Dagenfield of London, Ohio; Jonathan Mills of Wooster, Ohio; and Nicholas Yontz of Springfield, Ohio. They were accompanied by William Kanzig, ONU engineering machinist, and faculty advisor Dr. Jed Marquart.
