Ohio Northern University to present opera workshop ‘The Mushroom Pie’
The Ohio Northern University Department of Music will present an opera workshop performance featuring ONU vocal majors in Presser Hall’s Snyder Recital Hall on Friday, March 27, at 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The opera workshop performance, under the direction of ONU lecturer in music and musical theatre Kirsten Osbun-Manley, will perform “La Pizza Con Funghi (The Mushroom Pie) - A Bel Canto Opera in One Act” by Seymour Barab. “La Pizza Con Funghi (The Mushroom Pie)” is presented through special arrangement with G. Schirmer Inc., publisher and copyright owner.
The cast consists of Chelsie Cree, a senior music performance major from Toledo, Ohio, as Voluptua, Countess Formaggio; Kirsten Fuelling, a senior music performance major from Celina, Ohio, as Phobia; Jordan Loyd, a junior music performance major from Independence, Ky., as Scorpio; and Jaired Birks, a senior music performance major from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, as Count Formaggio. Kristen Jürgens, ONU lecturer in music, is serving as accompanist.
“La Pizza Con Funghi (The Mushroom Pie)” is a satire on Italian opera of the period. Voluptua is in love with Scorpio. In order to be free to marry him, she plans to poison her husband, Count Formaggio. Her maid, Phobia, warns the Count of his wife’s duplicity. For this show of loyalty, she must lose her life. Eventually, so must all the members of the cast.
As part of the vocal curriculum, the opera workshop is designed to give Ohio Northern students the opportunity to perform staged works, including aria and scene recitals, one-act operas, and full-length works with orchestra.
