Mail Center Policies

The Mail Center at Ohio Northern University serves as the University’s primary contact for University business conducted with the United States Postal Service. The Mail Center at ONU is subject to enforce the regulations from the USPS, FedEx, UPS and DHL regarding the handling of all incoming items. 

Mail Handling Policy

  • All outgoing mail must contain a return address.
  • Any incoming US Mail addressed to an individual at the University’s address is presumed to be the business of Ohio Northern University. The handling of mail within a department may be without regard for the named recipient unless marked “confidential”.
  • Undeliverable items will be handled in accordance with the carriers’ policies of returning items to the sender. The Mail Center at ONU is not responsible for items not properly addressed which may be returned to the sender.
  • Outgoing mail that does not display a university return address will be returned to the sending department for postage to be applied.

OUTGOING Personal Mail

As stated in the Administrative Policies & Procedures Manual in Section 4; 8.01, all personal mail must have postage applied prior to arriving in the Mail Center at ONU. Charging personal postage to a University account is strictly prohibited.

Personal items being shipped to ONU via the USPS, FedEx or UPS will not be delivered. Once the item(s) is/are received, the recipient will receive an email and will be able to receive the item from the ONU Mail Center. 

The USPS does not permit employees to place a change of address to have all personal mail sent to ONU. All personal items should be sent to the home address of the recipient. 


The US Postal Service, UPS and FedEx are not required to re-direct items to the ONU Mail Center that have been intended for home delivery. 

Incoming items requiring "adult signature"

The ONU Mail Center cannot accept items delivered to the ONU Mail Center that require an adult signature. This includes but is not limited to alcohol. For questions, please contact the ONU Mail Center Manager


Nonprofit mailings are only accepted in the Mail Center before 11:30 a.m. All envelopes must have nonprofit indicia preprinted on them. There is a minimum of 200 pieces for a mailing to be sent at the nonprofit rate and none can include campus or international addresses.

All nonprofit mailing addresses must be received from the ONU Banner database. You must contact Printing Services if using addresses not in the ONU Banner database.

The department postage billing will occur by the 3rd of each month and will process the postage and FedEx charges for each department. All inquiries regarding the postage charges must be communicated to the Mail Center Manager no later than 30 days of when the actual charge was made.
