How to Use

Click on the first letter of an individual's last name. Scroll down through the alphabetical list to see if the person is included.

LAST NAME INDEX

Explanation of Fields:

Last Name:

Contains the last name or surname of the person as it first appeared in the catalog

First Name:

Contains the first and middle names of the person, if available

Alt. Name.:

Contains an alternate name, such as a married name, that appeared later in the catalogs. The alternate name is listed last name first followed by a comma, then first name. A date is also included to indicate when the name changed. "(listed in 1900)" indicates that the alternate name appeared only in 1900. "(since 1900)" indicates that the alternate name appeared in 1900 and also the years after 1900.

Faculty/Administrator/Trustee (F,A,T):

This field is used for conducting special searches in the database, and also provides a quick reference of the person's status in the university. Only the letters F, A, and T are listed in this field.

Representing:

Field reserved for future used with trustees.

Position #:

Contains the job title of the person. Part-time and adjunct faculty contain the words (Part Time) and (Adjunct), respectively, after the job title. Some abbreviations are:

Asst. = Assistant

Ass. or Assoc. = Associate

Prof. = Professor

Dept. = Department

Year #: To #:

Contains the year or years the person served under the job title in the field to the left. The years are listed according to the published catalog year. For instance, "Year 1: 1950 To 1: 1950" indicates that the person appeared in the 1950 published catalog. This could mean that the person served the 1949-50 academic year or the 1950-51 academic year, all depending upon how the university published the catalog during that time. The database is structured around the published years because it remains consistent and dependable throughout the entire ONU history, and will avoid confusion when cross-referencing the database with the catalogs.

Education:

Contains any educational background that might have been listed in the catalogs. A "?" following a college or university indicates that the degree was most likely received at that institution, but it is not absolutely certain.

Address:

Contains the home address and the years during which that person resided there. The years in parentheses are according to the published catalog years.

Colleges Served and Other Positions:

Contains other positions and its years, because the four position fields on the first page are used. Also contains the colleges the faculty served when the catalogs listed faculty under the colleges in the early 1900's. Appendix A contains a list of college and department names that are in this field. The college names were standardized so that the database could be searched by a specific name.

Comments:

Contains other pertinent information that did not apply to the other fields. Most comments include non published catalog dates, leave of absences, sabbaticals and dates retired. Biographies, obituaries, or photographs may also be included.
