KEEN

In a world of accelerating change, the skills you learn today can be obsolete tomorrow. What will stand the test of time, however, is a mindset. The Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) was created to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset among undergraduate engineering students. The entrepreneurial mindset is one that embraces change, blending technical understanding with the desire to craft innovative solutions that create extraordinary value for others. Ohio Northern University is among 24 elite schools invited to join KEEN, and it’s one of the few institutions to be with the network since its inception in 2005.

In Ohio Northern’s College of Engineering, professors re-imagine engineering education through the KEEN framework. Much like KEEN professors from across the network, they strive to instill the entrepreneurial mindset within undergraduate engineering students by championing curiosity, connections and the creation of value. At Ohio Northern, undergraduate engineering students are encouraged to be curious about the ever-changing world and to connect everything they learn in new and innovative ways to reveal opportunities to create extraordinary value for others.

Ohio Northern University has expanded the KEEN Student Outcomes (KSOs) from the KEEN Framework. The outcomes of curiosity, connections, creating value, collaboration, communication and character are broken into multiple actionable student outcomes to enable more intentional scaffolding of the entrepreneurial mindset throughout the curriculum. In the mechanical engineering curriculum, KSOs should be achieved by each student in each area by the time the student graduates. Furthermore, each of the outcomes are covered in every year of the student's education.  The attachment below, ONU KEEN Entrepreneurially Minded Course Enhancements, is a summary of the work done thus far by ONU faculty. For additional information, email keen@onu.edu.
