Prospective Students

"I feel confident that the engineering department has not only provided me with the knowledge to succeed
in the world, but has also handed me the skills I need to keep learning through my career."
Welcome Prospective Students. As a prospective student, you may not be completely decided on your future plans, but don't worry, neither are most of your peers. This page is for you to read about some of the feelings that current students have shared with us about their experience while in the ECCS Department. To learn more about ONU, please visit the Future Students page. Visit the Admissions page if you would like to apply to ONU or schedule a campus visit. The College of Engineering FAQ Page may also be able to answer any questions you have about Engineering.

"Although it took me over a year and a half into my college career, I finally found C.S. was the right major for me. I declared Computer Science not because I was a young Bill Gates or even because I knew a lot about the machines. The idea, at the suggestion of my advisor, of jumping into a field of study foreign to me and dominated by males both challenged and scared me to death. Once I met with the chairman of the |
| ECCS department, I learned that not only was the female population slim, but upon entering, I would, in fact, be the only girl my age.I soon realized that intimidation was not going to be a factor. I found myself starting from the ground up, with beginner-level programming language classes. Since that year, I?ve taken classes dealing with subjects like architecture, operating systems, and artificial intelligence to prepare me to graduate in the spring." | |

"I learned a great deal in my four years as Computer Engineering student at Northern and not just about computers. Many classes in engineering are challenging; however, the challenge is what makes these classes interesting and exciting. The professors have a strong relationship with the students and they are always willing to help student |
| through the challenging courses. I feel confident that the engineering department has not only provided me with the knowledge to succeed in the world, but has also handed me the skills I need to keep learning through my career. After all, the field of Computer Engineering is always changing, and you must learn "how to learn" in order to stay ahead of the field. ONU has given me the ability to go wherever I want in engineering; it is truly a university full of opportunities." | |

| "Electrical Engineering is one of the most rigorous courses of undergraduate study at any university, and Ohio Northern University is no exception. It's not difficult to see why this is so. Electrical Engineers research, design, test, and maintain everything from electric power plants to communication satellites. Such a broad field requires intensive education in basic computer programming, circuit analysis, chemistry, physics, and calculus, followed by | |
| classes in analog and digital electronics, electromagnetics, power systems, filters, digital signal processing, and communications systems, to name a few. Most upper-level courses are taught in lecture for three hours a week with a three-hour laboratory staffed by both a professor and a teaching assistant to apply theory from the classroom to real-world applications. The faculty and staff are always very willing to work with students when they have questions or want to probe a topic deeper. Electrical Engineering is a challenging and rewarding field with many opportunities to develop the technology that surrounds us." | |
