Ohio Northern University’s Summer Music Camp is designed for students in grades 7-12 and provides many performing and educational opportunities. Campers register as vocal, band or string >major, with auditions held the first day of camp to determine chair and voice placement.
Campers will have the opportunity to perform in symphonic band, symphonic choir, string orchestra, instrumental ensembles, show choir and/or jazz band, and will be exposed to music theory, music technology, conducting, dance, piano classes and jazz improvisation. Symphonic choir, symphonic band and string ensemble rehearse throughout the week and perform a Friday night concert. The small ensembles will perform on Thursday night. A camp wide banquet will be held before the concert on Friday.
This year's guest artists are Alexander Beer (band) and Jennifer Perry Edwards (choir).
Elementary School Piano Camp
(entering first through fourth grade, with at least six months previous piano experience)
The Theme: Modern Music
Campers in this camp will be exposed to the startling, eerie, amusing, unpredictable and even crazy sounds of the 20th century through guided interactive sessions that involve both listening and composing. By exploring these sounds, campers will discover the power music has to create moods, sway emotions and imitate feelings that are difficult to describe with words. Campers also will be placed into duet, trio or quartet combinations and will have a chance to perform a solo piece of their choice.
This camp meets Monday through Thursday from 1:30 to 4 p.m. with a recital on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
Middle School Piano Camp
(entering fifth through eighth grade, with at least two years of previous piano experience)
The Theme: 20th Century Sounds
Composers in the 20th century loved to find new ways to create unique sounds. Their imagination and ingenuity pushed music beyond its traditional limits of rhythm and harmony to provide us with some of the most descriptive and unpredictable piano music. This camp will explore these sounds and the techniques required to interpret and create this modern music. Campers will learn how to read 20th century scores and use their own imaginations to make the music come to life. They also will improve their own solo piece during daily master classes, play in a duet or trio, and participate in a jazz improvisation class – all featured in a recital on Friday. Friday’s schedule also will include the very popular Musical Olympics!
This camp meets Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with a recital on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
