ONU students help with tax preparation
One of the experiential learning opportunities that ONU’s business and law students focus on every year is tax preparation. Each year, elderly and low-income taxpayers in Hardin and the surrounding counties find free income tax assistance from Ohio Northern University through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).
VITA offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income (generally $53,000 and below) individuals who cannot prepare tax returns on their own. As part of this program, ONU students receive training and become IRS-certified to help prepare basic and intermediate federal tax returns and identify special credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly. In addition to helping clients prepare their federal tax returns, ONU students can also help clients prepare their state, school district and city/village income tax returns.
ONU offers three methods of income tax assistance to members of the community:
- Facilitated Self Assistance (FSA) with the ONU My Free Taxes FSA link to online IRS tax preparation software which clients can access from anywhere and receive call-in help from specially trained United Way volunteers.
- Fusion FSA with the ONU My Free Taxes Fusion FSA link to online IRS tax preparation software which clients access in the College of Business Administration’s computer lab and receive help from ONU VITA-trained volunteers during normal ONU VITA hours.
ONU students use TaxWise Online software to prepare returns for clients. ONU students offer free electronic filing (e-filing) services at the Dicke College of Business Administration (Room 140), on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5-9 p.m. from Feb. 10, through April 9 (excluding March 3-7). Appointments are available but not required.
