One of the best things about college is the incredible opportunities you can have if you show a little interest. I know quite a few students who have come to college and discovered a passion or activity that they would have never known if they didn't put themselves out there and get involved. I also know a few who have not discovered anything new. They go to class, come back to their room, eat in MAC, come back to their room etc., living day-to-day and never knowing some of the joys that come with being a college student.
Now I'm not saying everyone is going to find something new and fun that changes their life, but like that old saying goes, "You never know until you try." For instance, I would have never thought I would enjoy being on ONU's Student Senate. I did class council in high school and it was unorganized, cliquish and I didn't feel like I made a difference in the least. That is probably why I didn't do Senate until my 4th year here! But I put aside my previous bad experience, put myself out there and ran for the position and it has been a greatly rewarding experience. In fact, this week is Senate Awareness week, so you'll see a lot of students walking around with their "Because It's YOUR Senate" shirt on! Feel free to stop them to talk or to ask a question, trust me ONU Senators LOVE to talk!
I'm a big fan of Twitter, so I asked my tweeps this question: "When you were in College, did you discover an activity or interest you never would have otherwise tried?"
Here are some of the responses:
@nicklucido: For me, sales. I work in the ad dept of @thesnews, and I really enjoy my job. It also helped me prep for PR.
@LaurenNicholeRx: I discovered Greek Life. Definitely never saw myself as a sorority girl but it's def been one of the best things I've done in college
@harlau1: I did rowing!
So whatever your fears, place them aside and try something new! It might turn out to be the best thing you've ever done.
