Posters at the Capitol: Undergraduate Research in Northwest Ohio

ImageThe Seventh Annual Posters at the Capitol
Ohio Statehouse Atrium, Columbus, OH
10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., April 8, 2014

Undergraduate students from all disciplines are invited to submit abstracts for research posters to be presented at the Posters at the Capitol, April 8, 2014. Students selected for participation will design, produce, and present professional quality research posters. Students conducting the research and designing the posters will attend with their posters, so that Ohio legislators, legislative staff, state agency personnel, and visitors to the Statehouse can ask questions to learn more about the discoveries students are making and their significance for Ohio. This annual Ohio event is modeled after the highly successful national Posters on the Hill display, held annually by the Council on Undergraduate Research in the Capitol of the United States in Washington, D.C.

Benefits to Presenters

Presenting at Posters at the Capitol looks great on a résumé or curriculum vitae! Engaging in and presenting research helps students develop skills desired by employers and graduate and professional schools, skills such as analytical thinking, creativity, perseverance, confidence, the ability to speak clearly and to tailor one’s message to an audience, etc.

Additionally, participants will receive a Posters at the Capitol name badge, group photograph, and program and a school lanyard. Transportation to and from Columbus, lunch, and an afternoon snack are provided. Finally, many presenters will have the opportunity to tour the Statehouse, meet with their state representatives, and discuss their research with them. There is no conference fee.

Submission and Selection

Abstracts for posters must be submitted by Friday, March 21, 2014. Both individual student and student group projects are welcome.

To submit, student presenters must ask their research adviser to agree to endorse their submission. Once the research adviser has agreed, complete and submit the online abstract form. Enter the research adviser's email address carefully, as an email will be sent to that address requesting a separate brief statement of support.

For additional details, please see the Posters at the Capitol website hosted by the University of Toledo.

The program committee will notify students via e-mail on or about Wednesday, March 26, 2014.

Presenters’ Responsibilities

Participants will receive a Posters at the Capitol program packet containing guidelines for preparing posters, traveling to and from Columbus on April 8, contacting state legislators from their home or school districts, and expectations for their participation during the event.

Shortly before the event, each presenter must write and send a letter to the Ohio representative of the student’s home district. Students from outside of Ohio will write to the representative of the district in which their school is located.
