ONU Piano Academy
Hands-on learning, service, and community involvement are central to a piano studio teacher’s career, and the ONU Piano Academy serves the community with practical training for our students. After passing the Piano Pedagogy course, ONU pianists are eligible to teach in the Academy, offering weekly lessons to area youngsters grades K-12. Academy instructors receive supervision and advice along the way from keyboard faculty. Piano Academy participants participate in recitals in the Spring and on various holidays throughout the year as scheduling allows. Occasional field trips are also a part of the curriculum.
There are many opportunities to accompany and collaborate at ONU for pianists and keyboardists, including performing with ensembles such as the ONU Symphony Orchestra, the ONU Wind Orchestra, University Singers, and even the ONU Marching Band, as well as several chamber ensembles, including pit orchestra. Additionally, pianists have ample opportunity for both solo performances and accompanying experiences with instrumentalists and vocalists in the ONU Music department. Finally, the Annual OMTA Piano Duettists Competition, hosted each October on ONU’s campus in beautiful Presser Hall, is a competition for K-12 duet teams who are students of OMTA piano teachers. Students compete in a “traditional” classical competition and a “creative” competition, and have a lot of fun in the process. ONU pianists often help with this event.
