PreLaw/3+3

WANT TO BECOME AN ATTORNEY? START PREPARING NOW. OUR PRE- LAW OPTION PUTS YOU ON THE RIGHT TRACK WITH PERSONAL ADVISING AND A SOLID CURRICULUM. WE NOT ONLY HELP YOU GET ACCEPTED INTO LAW SCHOOL, WE HELP YOU BECOME A STAR STUDENT ONCE YOU’RE THERE.

GET ON THE LAW TRACK

The pre-law track can be declared with almost any undergraduate major—from engineering to history, finance to professional writing. You’ll then be assigned a faculty advisor who will work with you from day one until you graduate. The advisor will help you design a program of study that will prepare you for the rigors of law school.

You’ll take a mix of challenging classes with strong research and writing components. Your academic progress will be closely monitored to make sure your GPA remains solid. Our professors go above and beyond to provide extra help and tutoring if needed. You’ll also have access to study sessions, pre-law activities, and other assistance in preparation for the LSAT exam.

If you plan to attend the ONU Pettit College of Law, you’ll have an inside track. We give preferential treatment to admission for all ONU undergraduates. No other university offers this advantage. As part of the pre-law program, you’re not a number, you’re part of a family. You’ll enjoy small class sizes and amazing friendships. Your professors will be able to write heartfelt letters of recommendation because they will truly know you and your abilities.

Upon graduation, you’ll be ready to make your mark!

OPPORTUNITY ABOUNDS

LET’S DEBATE

We have an impressive Mock Trial program, and our teams compete across the Midwest. In fact, in the past five years, we’ve garnered 45 individual or team awards at Midwest competitions. Participating in Mock Trial is excellent preparation for becoming an attorney. You’ll learn how to examine witnesses, analyze evidence, adhere to the federal rules of evidence, and present opening and closing arguments.

SOLID OUTCOMES

Our graduates get accepted into top notch law schools, including American University, Case Western Reserve, University of Cincinnati, Duke University, Georgetown University, University of Michigan, University of North Carolina, Northwestern University, University of Notre Dame, The Ohio State University and Vanderbilt University.

3 + 3 = OPPORTUNITY

Would you like to reduce your student debt and become an attorney faster? ONU has taken advantage of a new rule in the state of Ohio to offer a unique 3+3 law school admissions program.

Through this program, you can complete your bachelor’s degree and juris doctorate degree in just six years instead of seven. You not only save on tuition costs, you enter the workforce earlier.

The 3+3 program is offered with the following ONU undergraduate majors: Business Administration (BS); English (BA); Chemistry (BA); History (BA); Philosophy (BA); Political Science (BA); Religion (BA) and Sociology (BA). These programs have designed a course of study that you can complete in three years and that prepares you for the rigors of law school.

You need to be a committed student to participate in the 3+3 program. You will not be able to pursue a double major or minor if you choose this path. However, you will be able to take full advantage of the many academic and extracurricular activities that ONU offers. You’ll make a smooth transition into law school, guided by a familiar campus and supportive professors.

Matt Oyster

THINK SUCCESS

MATT OYSTER, BA ’07, JD ’10 WITH A MAJOR IN POLITICAL SCIENCE

The pre-law program prepares students for law school and beyond. From LSAT preparation to course selection to career development, this program has it all. It undoubtedly eased and guided my transition from the classroom to the courtroom.

Even before Matt Oyster stepped foot on ONU’s campus, he knew he wanted to become a lawyer. He majored in political science, minored in German, and declared a pre-law option. While a student, he was heavily involved in ONU’s Mock Trial program. He also assumed leadership roles in many student organizations including Sigma Phi Epsilon, a social fraternity, and Pi Sigma Alpha, a political science honors fraternity. He then attended ONU’s Pettit College of Law for his juris doctorate. After graduation, he worked for the Ohio Attorney General’s office before assuming his current role as deputy general counsel for the Ohio Casino Control Commission. In this role, he provides legal counsel on issues related to gaming, labor and employment, Ohio’s Sunshine Laws, and more. “Without a doubt, I truly enjoy critical thinking, problem solving and writing persuasively. Rarely a day goes by when I don’t get to do all three,” he says.
