Design (Minor)

A MINOR IN DESIGN IS A GREAT WAY FOR STUDENTS TO DIVERSIFY AN ACADEMIC MAJOR AND TO INCORPORATE DESIGN PROCESSES, DESIGN SKILLS, AND DESIGN THINKING INTO THE OVERALL ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE. A DESIGN MINOR IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO NON-ART AND DESIGN MAJORS. STUDENTS SHOULD KEEP IN MIND THAT A MINOR IS NOT INTENDED TO OVERLOAD A STUDENT’S SCHEDULE. RATHER, ACADEMIC ADVISORS SHOULD HELP STUDENTS INTEGRATE THE DESIGN MINOR AND ELECTIVE CLASSES WITHIN THE OVERALL PLAN FOR THE AREA OF STUDY FOR GRADUATION. STUDENTS WISHING TO PURSUE THIS MINOR ARE ENCOURAGED TO MEET WITH A FACULTY REPRESENTATIVE OF THE DEPARTMENT AND TO GET APPROVAL OF A PROPOSED COURSE PLAN. FOR THE MINOR IN DESIGN, A MINIMUM OF 21 CREDIT HOURS IS REQUIRED FOR COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM. STUDENTS PURSUING A MINOR IN DESIGN SHOULD BEGIN TO SATISFY THE CORE COURSES IN VISUAL FOUNDATIONS.

The minor in design provides students an overview of basic visual communication skills and the concerns of the communication design professions. Students pursuing the minor are generally seeking unique careers where design and creativity may be desirable skills. Recent research has identified these creative problem-solving skills and diverse sets of knowledge as being sought in a wid range of disciplines, industries, and professions. The minor in design contributes to the university's goal of graduating competitive and versatile students.

The curriculum of the design minor guides students toward a range of class work that the A&D faculty consider essential to understanding the foundations of design, including a strong conceptual sense. The minor affords the Department of Art & Design a structured and more comprehensive means to make significant contributions to the overall educational and cultural experiences on campus and to extend the basic A&D mission to a wider range of students at Ohio Northern.
