DEVELOP YOUR TALENT
Large institutions just can’t provide the individualized attention and opportunities you’ll find here. Our students learn just as much outside the classroom as they do inside. They participate in juried art shows and portfolio critiques in major cities. They go on field trips, participate in group problem-solving sessions, design campus publications, produce campaigns for fundraisers, and interact with visiting artists and designers. They take intensive, lab-based courses in design and work on real-world projects for actual clients.
Here, you’ll join a close-knit family of artists. From the time you arrive on campus until you graduate, you’ll be guided by the same faculty advisor. You’ll enjoy small class sizes, hands on learning experiences and amazing friendships with your fellow design students. Our dedicated professors will get to know you. They will go above and beyond to develop you as a designer and professional.
As an advertising design major, you’ll take a broad range of courses that will develop your creative, critical-thinking and business skills. You’ll take liberal arts courses and art and design courses form the College of Arts & Sciences and marketing classes from the College of Business Administration. You’ll prepare a portfolio of professional advertising work that will help you land a great job right after graduation.
It takes a special blend of talent, passion and business insight to forge a career in advertising design. Rest assured, we’ll help you build a career doing what you’re good at and what you love!
OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO
Imagine traveling to New York, San Francisco or Chicago – all expenses paid – with your design professors and peers to attend a professional conference. Or spending the summer in Europe visiting famous museums. Or having your portfolio reviewed by designers in Ann Arbor, Cincinnati or Columbus. We believe a well-rounded education includes opportunities to travel, experience new places, meet new people, and stretch your comfort zone. These opportunities are here for you to grab.
We encourage advertising design majors to engage in internships. And we help you land strategic internships aligned toward your dream career. Our students intern locally, nationally and internationally. These opportunities help you gain experience and build your résumé. Our advertising design students have interned at prestigious agencies like The Mullen Advertising Agency and Chute Gerdeman Agency.
USE DESIGN FOR GOOD
You can make a difference with your work. Every year, ONU art and design students craft pottery bowls and host a soup luncheon to raise money to combat hunger. This worthwhile event supports the Backpack Food Program, which provides local schoolchildren in need with food for the weekend.
MICAELA NAUMAN BFA WITH A MAJOR IN ADVERTISING DESIGN ’10
The art and design department at ONU is a close-knit group. My professors weren’t just my educators; they were my role models, friends and biggest supporters. They pushed me to do my best,” she says. “I’m currently five months into a one-way ticket adventure, and life is going pretty well. My passion for design thrives off experiencing other cultures and the beautiful world around us. I work with clients that I am super-passionate about. One day I’m designing tour books and apparel lines for a travel company, the next food trucks and product packaging. I’m a digital nomad – and it’s exciting!
Micaela Nauman runs a booming freelance design business while embarking on adventures around the world. At ONU, she played volleyball, attended national conferences for the Professional Association for Design. After graduation, she backpacked across Europe and fell in love with international travel. She moved to San Diego and founded Micaela Shalane Creative so she could combine her lifestyle and business into one. Within a short time, she built up an impressive clientele in the U.S., Canada and Brazil and garnered numerous design awards.
