1. Acquire a wide base of knowledge of descriptive chemistry
2. Develop skills in quantitative modeling of static and dynamic chemical systems
3. Select and apply appropriate physical measurements to laboratory investigations
4. Attain proficiency in conducting safe and efficient laboratory syntheses and separations of chemical species

American Chemical Society (ACS) EXAMINATIONS are given for all courses where their administration is appropriate. The exams given in 2005-06 included the following: introductory, organic, thermodynamics, quantitative analysis, and instrumental.
The seventh learning objective is covered primarily by the SENIOR CAPSTONE. The senior capstone experience in the chemistry department consists of an oral student seminar covering an area of current research. The research topic discussed is not in an area in which the student has conducted research in and therefore requires in depth reading and understanding on the student's part. A written "term" paper is also part of the capstone experience. A student is given a grade for this course. The instructor of the course and other faculty members guide and evaluate the student's preparation for the seminar. In addition to the grade, which evaluates the student performance, an evaluation device was developed and tested in the 2006-07 academic year to assist the department in their progress in achieving success for learning objective based on their oral delivery, students were graded by each department professor with a score from one to 10 (10 being a high score) on the following items:
1) Ability to perform an effective literature search
2) Ability to select an appropriate topic
3) Ability to organize and present material logically
4) Ability to combine information from various sources
5) Ability to explain data and relationships between variables
6) Ability to support conclusions from data
7) Ability to demonstrate knowledge of seminar topic
8) Ability to demonstrate overall chemistry knowledge
9) Ability to criticize shortcomings in presented material
10) Ability to communicate relevance of research
The senior capstone is also intended to be an experience in which students use formal classroom information and critical-thinking skills acquired during their tenure in the department to examine, understand and evaluate new information. This is learning objective eight. The department is currently generating an evaluation tool that will include items directed at learning objective eight.
