Student Organizations
Tau Beta Sigma
Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority provides service to collegiate bands, encourages the advancement of women in the band profession, and promotes and enriches an appreciation of band music through recognition, leadership development, and education of its members.
Tau Beta Sigma operates primarily as a student service and leadership recognition society whose chief aim is to assist the directors in developing the leadership and enthusiasm that they require of their band. Our goals are not only to provide the band with organized and concentrated service activities, but also to give our membership valid and wholesome experiences in organization, leadership, and social contacts. The honorary nature of membership is based on our premise that “it is an honor to be selected to serve”—this band, this music department, and Ohio Northern University.
Chapter responsibilities include concentrated service activities as well as providing the intangible items of morale, spirit, enthusiasm, atmosphere, and attitude within the band. The cultivation and maintenance of an agreeable and enthusiastic attitude is mandatory for all of our members, and this serves to foster the wholesome and cooperative spirit that each director wants for his/her band.
Membership in Tau Beta Sigma thus becomes an educational and service activity as well as a social one. And it is this kind of endeavor that enriches the band student’s life and sharpens an appreciation for both the best in music and what it takes to achieve it.

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia
On November 15, 2009, a four year endeavor finally came to fruition. The Rho Pi chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity for musical men was officially established and made part of the fabric of Ohio Northern. It started with a single spark of interest in 2005. What started as humble thoughts grew steadily in to a major project. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is a fraternity devoted to the unification of musical men and advancement of music in America. The organization as a whole is devoted to spreading music to everyone and bettering communities through its talents and traditions. This is accomplished through the bonding of musical men from all over campus and alumni members throughout the community.
The Rho Pi chapter is extremely progressive and enthusiastic about advancing and becoming a more influential part of the Northern family and as part of the Ohio community as well. They will be hosting the spring district convention called the Spring Fling for Phi Mu Alpha here at Ohio Northern. The group was chosen based on their amazing effort and dedication that has already been exhibited even before becoming an official organization. Along with this, Northern students will be seeing more of Phi Mu Alpha around campus in the form of projects, concerts, and other musical endeavors.
