Dr. MJ Sunny Zank, professor of music, joined the ONU faculty in 1993. Her teaching specialties are music theory/composition, music history and ethnomusicology. Dr. Zank holds degrees from the University of Oregon (B.A., M.A.) and the University of Northern Colorado (D.A.). Following her undergraduate work she did additional studies at the Franz Liszt Academy (Budapest), Mozarteum (Saltzberg), and Trossingen Hochschule (Germany). Recently, she has done extensive post-doctoral work in Asian Studies.
As an active scholar she has presented papers at meetings of the American Musicological Society, the Sonneck Society, the College Music Society, the Japan Studies Association and the Suzuki Association of the Americas. Her compositions (orchestral, choral, chamber music) have been performed across the U. S and Canada. She also serves as adjudicator for the National American Pen Women music composition scholarship.
In addition to her teaching and research, Dr. Zank is currently chair of the ONU University Council. She serves on the Board of Directors for Japan Studies Association, and the Great Lakes Region - College Music Society executive board (theory).
