The ONU Astronomy Club, with Dr. Jason Pinkney as faculty advisor, held a viewing of the Orionid Meteor shower in October. A meteor, also called "shooting star" or "falling star," is a streak of light in the atmosphere caused when space debris pierces the Earth's atmosphere at speeds in excess of 30 miles per second. Several meteors were spotted by the more than 20 people who attended.

During the recent presidential election, most news agencies relied on similar systems that tabulate and automatically display election results. John R. and Karen Zika, of Statesville, N.C., and Susan (Zika) Warmsby, of Atlanta, Ga., have donated a 19th-century violin to Ohio Northern University. The Zika family presented the instrument to Tom Hunt, chairman of the ONU music department, on Nov. 19.
The violin has been in the Zika family since 1933. Charles Zika, who owned the violin, is the father of John, Susan and longtime ONU professor Rosemary (Zika) Williams, who passed away in 2007.
