Biography:
Charles Bates is a Professor of Music at Ohio Northern University. He received his Ph.D. from the Ohio State University, where he was a graduate assistant with the Ohio State University Marching Band. He received his M.A., and M.ED. from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis and B.S., in Music Education, from Virginia State University. Dr. Bates studied composition with Elliot Schwartz, Frank Bencriscutto and Pulitzer Prize winning composer, Dominick Argento. He has completed over 200 compositions and arrangements for wind-band.
As a performer (percussion) and band leader Dr. Bates has worked with Louie Bellson, Clark Terry, Steve Allen and Allen Vizzutti to name a few. Ensembles under his direction have performed for the OMEA Conference and at venues throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. At Ohio Northern he conducts the Symphonic Band, Marching Band and Pep Band. He serves as an academic advisor for instrumental music education majors and faculty advisor for the University’s very active chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. He is a member of several professional and honorary organizations including the Ohio Music Educators Association and NAfME, the College Band Directors National Association, Kappa Kappa Psi and Phi Beta Mu. Dr. Bates serves as adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor. He is a past President of the Ohio Private Colleges Instrumental Conductors Association.
