We offer majors, leading to either the B.A. degree or the B.S. degree (depending on the choice of the general education program leading), in mathematics (with either the advanced mathematical studies, or teacher licensure concentrations), applied mathematics, and mathematical statistics, as well as minors in mathematics, applied mathematics and applied statistics. Our secondary education program in mathematics is nationally accredited by the NCTM.
In the last seven years, our students gave more than 70 presentations at regional or national mathematics meetings and co-authored ten mathematics or statistics-related refereed publications. Among the graduate schools which accepted our students we can include Ohio State University, Purdue University, University of Florida, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina. A wide range of opportunities in academia and beyond are available for the students completing our mathematical statistics major.
Vision Statement: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Ohio Northern University will be recognized regionally and nationally for the premier undergraduate experience provided to students by a faculty committed to excellence in teaching, maintaining active research programs that stimulate undergraduate research, and engaged in outreach and service to profession, institution and community.
The mission of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is to provide an environment in which students grow intellectually and which encourages the continued professional growth of the faculty. To achieve this, the department is committed to introducing students to the concepts used in mathematics, to giving them experiences in the development and application of their critical and analytical reasoning skills, to exposing them to the relationships between mathematics and other fields of endeavor and to preparing them for their career choices.
