Field Experience Guidelines

Each course syllabus gives specific objectives and requirements for field-based experiences. The objectives, requirements, and evaluation forms to be used by the cooperating teacher and the university supervisor will be given to the teacher education candidate and the cooperating teacher at the beginning of the experience.

Candidates are expected to complete a minimum of 160 field experience hours. Paid experience, such as working as a camp counselor, will not be accepted for field experience. Field experience hour requirements vary according to licensure program.

It is the policy of the Center for Teacher Education at Ohio Northern University that every teacher candidate have an up-to-date background check on file before participating in any field experience or clinical experience/student teaching. Some school districts/buildings require copies of these before a teacher candidate can be placed within the system. It is possible that a candidate will not be placed for field experience (and thus would not be able to complete the program) if the background check so warrants.
