Chemistry & Biochemistry
Ohio Northern University’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry—a signature focus of the institution—offers an interactive learning environment and is accredited by the American Chemical Society. Our dynamic faculty consists of 13 tenure-track professors with chemistry Ph.D.s. who engage undergraduates in a broad range of top-level research within five disciplines: analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic and physical. In 2011, ONU had six ACS-certified graduates.
The newly constructed Mathile Center for the Natural Sciences is a student-centered academic research and learning facility that blends hands-on teaching excellence with advanced technology in a functional modern environment.
Select from a variety of courses for both non-science and science majors including chemistry and biochemistry chemistry and work toward a B.S. or a B.A. degree. The department offers both a basic program and an ACS-approved program in chemistry and biochemistry. Students in physics, biology or pharmacy can earn a chemistry minor.
Graduates are highly successful in pursuing career paths in medicine, research, industry, forensics or environmental science such as Astra-Zeneca, Battelle Research, BP Chemical, Cooper Tire and Rubber, Dow Chemical, DuPont, Eastman-Kodak, Eli Lilly, Proctor & Gamble. Students also attend graduate school at universities including Case Western, Chicago, Cornell, Georgia Tech, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin and Yale.
